The Walleye - Web Design

About

During my placement with The Walleye, the majority of my focus was on their website, which had recently transitioned from WordPress to Squarespace. Although I had limited experience with Squarespace, I quickly adapted and gained valuable skills. My work involved publishing new blog posts, updating their event calendar, and repairing several years’ worth of older content that hadn’t transferred properly. Below are a few examples of pages I designed myself, reflecting both my technical growth and attention to detail.

Best of 2024

This was my very first web assignment during my placement, and I had a lot of fun pulling inspiration from the magazine—matching the colours and incorporating some of its layout elements. I taught myself how to use Markdown blocks for these pages and figured out how to create the dropdown menu, which was a rewarding learning experience.

The Walleye's Question Period

I was given this assignment near the end of my placement. Adrian had interviewed some of the candidates for the upcoming election, and I started by proofreading all the Q&As. I then created and linked the individual candidate pages—building on what I had learned while creating the dropdown menu for the ‘Best of’ pages. I also designed the featured graphic by removing the backgrounds from candidate photos in Photoshop and adding their party colours as backgrounds in Illustrator.

TBay Eats

For this assignment, I created a calendar showcasing specials at local restaurants. This involved researching restaurant websites and social media accounts to find up-to-date specials and images, then adding them to the event calendar and keeping it regularly updated.
